Re: Gauss Pistol
Wed, May 2, 2007 - 3:59 PMI was considering building one of these for a while - I never summoned the determination to do it, but I found a lot of great information. For example, here's a nifty coilgun site:
www.anothercoilgunsite.com/
...and the video:
www.anothercoilgunsite.com/vid7...x.wmv
But if you're really interested, check out the World's Coilgun Arsenal. It has a list of every model of home-made coilgun, and their respective sites:

Hmm, so if I read this right, the idea is to switch on magnetic fields, in succession, to pull a ferromagnetic object down a tube.
=(1)=(2)=(3)=
And it looks like they're turning #1 on while #2 and #3 are off, then turn off #1 and #2 on when the object gets in the middle of #1. Etc...
I suppose the first thing I'd ask is why not have All three on at the beginning, and shut them down as they get to the center of each generator?
If I remember Physics 102 correctly the three should generate one big field centered on #2 until #1 is shut off, then the center moves between #2 and #3 until #2 is turned off, then it's all #3. The overall field strength should be greater and the accelerated center points might increase velocity. -

I believe they push, not pull. Also, by working in this way, they eliminate the need for precise switching of coils, it's all mechanical. The coils are just all turned on sequentially, then all turned off at once when the projectile exits the gun. -

Wed, August 1, 2007 - 2:59 PMUm, I love you for posting this.
Hmmm. Yeah, it's that damn battery problem again. Damnit, how are we ever going to get cool sci-fi weapons if we don't have high-energy pocket power cells?! -
