Sat, May 3, 2008 - 10:36 PMSo that's like, what, the second version of Difference Engine #2 made? Over 16 years ago, the first working version was built in England for the Science Museum in London, a process in which Doron Swade (mentioned in the Wired article) was involved. He wrote the fantastic book "The Difference Engine," which details Babbage's history, as well as the creation of the modern version.
But I'm very excited to see this new version -- I gotta go!

Sun, May 4, 2008 - 12:56 PMThe Science Museum actually built this one as well. I've seen the one they have there, and they had the workshop they were building the new one in set up for public viewing, so you could see it being produced.
Almost mesmerising, the way they work. -
