Re: Cyberpunk People
Mon, February 12, 2007 - 1:22 PMGreat find. Years ago I bought this: www.amazon.com/Cyberpunk-.../0679762302
It was a fascinating insight, but it was tongue in cheek, which somehow made me feel less nerdy about having what is essentially a style guide for geekdom.
The list of different Cyberpunk types always remidns me of this classic: www.brunching.com/images/ge...artbig.gif -

Re: Cyberpunk People
Mon, February 12, 2007 - 2:11 PMThat Cyberpunk fakebook looks like something the guys from Mondo would have done. I think I have actually seen that book too.
Ok, damn that geek chart, I guess I must be, I can look down most of the lines on there and find myself (I should note however that my sister in Atlanta was the one who gave me the damn Piers Anthony books and said to read them.) I like how the line delineates between "Ren Faire" & "SCA", yet they do cross over. Most people I knew were one or the other and did not care too much for the other (Yes, I did Faire for many, many years.) -

Re: Cyberpunk Furries
Mon, February 12, 2007 - 2:12 PMOhh, but I should point out I have nothing to do with them damn Furries! -

Mon, February 26, 2007 - 2:38 PMSpot on. R.U. Sirius (a contributor to said book) was the Editor in Chief at Mondo. St. Jude (the author of said book, RIP) was the Senior Editor.

Re: Cyberpunk People
Mon, February 12, 2007 - 7:18 PMi hope we have the same definition of otaku, dear...

Re: Cyberpunk People
Tue, February 13, 2007 - 5:02 AMwell, like I said - I'd never heard that term before but according to that link, this is the definition they give:
"...Japanese word 'otaku' means 'you'. - Otakus are mainly Japanese computer nerds who live in front of their computers and playstasions surfing the Net and playing computer games, totally alienated and isolated from the outside world..."
in my book - that's pretty sick. HA! -

Re: Cyberpunk People
Tue, February 13, 2007 - 2:28 PMThat definition of "otaku" is outdated. Although I love Karl Taro Greenfeld's writing ("Speed Tribes" was a great book about Japanese subcultures), that article is at least 10 years old.
Otaku now are considered to be especially obsessive fanboys and girls, who geek out on a particular genre or subgenre. (Think of the Trekkies here who learn to speak Klingon -- MAJOR Trek-otaku)
Since I'm lazy today, Wikipedia puts it nicely this way:
"In modern Japanese slang, an otaku refers to an overtly obsessive fan of any one particular theme, topic, or hobby. Common uses are anime otaku (one who sometimes enjoys many days of excessive anime watching with no rest) and manga otaku (a fan of Japanese graphic novels), pasokon otaku (personal computer geeks), gēmu otaku (playing video games), and otaku that are extreme fans of idols, heavily promoted singing girls. There are also tetsudō otaku or denshamania (metrophiles) or gunji otaku (military geeks)."
Atom's definitely otaku: I'm betting he geeks out on kaiju, hentai anime (especially the tentacle and lolicon subgenres), and pinku eiga.
And if you don't know what those mean -- LOOK 'EM UP! -_-" -

it means (anime) freak...most of whom tend to be nerds, but not automatically in a bad way at all...
cosplayers are usually otaku. -

Re: Cyberpunk People
Tue, February 13, 2007 - 6:27 PMwhich, before the flood of punchlines erupt, doesn't make you a nerd, it just makes you good with a sewing machine and a glue gun. -

Re: Cyberpunk People
Wed, February 14, 2007 - 3:06 AM:: it means (anime) freak
I disagree -- it ALSO means that, but there are other kinds of otaku, like model train freaks ("Densha otoko", which was in theaters last year, is about just that subculture).
Clearly the anime/manga subculture is the group to whom the word is most often applied, but I think that "otaku" is a wonderfully flexible, all-encompassing term that can be applied to many differing groups of geeks.
Wikipedia's page on it is pretty comprehensive -- because there are a lot of otaku out there who spent some serious time getting it that way!
Hentai free?! Prove it, fanboy! ^_^ -

Re: Hentai People
Sun, February 18, 2007 - 2:18 PMHentai anime was never the same for me after "Urotsukidoji" -- since once you've seen one 200-foot serpentine demonic penis shooting flaming jism, you've seen 'em all. -
