Re: Immortality in the next 20 years?
Thu, September 24, 2009 - 5:29 AMLotsa folks ignore Ray Kurzweil, but his track record speaks for itself.
I actually had the opportunity to speak to him once a long while back. The guy is so smart it's scary! -

Re: Immortality in the next 20 years?
Thu, September 24, 2009 - 11:37 AMkurzweil's IQ is indeed impressive, but only a fool makes a dated prediction...
60 years ago he would have been championing the inevitability of flying cars. -

Re: Immortality in the next 20 years?
Fri, September 25, 2009 - 4:03 AMActually, Kurzweil is noted for the accuracy of his dated predictions. He is no fool - his book "Age of Intelligent Machines" came out in 1989 and when he released "Age of Spiritual Machines" in 1999, ALL of his predictions had come true.
His predictions included VERY specific things like the fall of the Soviet Union, the explosion of the internet (most people in the late 1980s didn't know there was an internet), a computer program beating a human at chess, and MUCH more. He is a highly respected futurist because he doesn't just wax philosophic about generalities, he aims tights and nails the bull's eye.

Fri, September 25, 2009 - 6:43 AMI'm just wondering what happens when his Law of Accelerating Returns collides headlong with a bureaucracy. -

Re: Immortality in the next 20 years?
Fri, September 25, 2009 - 1:03 PMYou're both correct, of course. I'm not saying Ray is infallible (Ray wouldn't even say that), just pointing out that he is no fool and has an exceptional track record.
Plus he invented the best keyboard ever! -

Re: Immortality in the next 20 years?
Fri, September 25, 2009 - 1:15 PMi'm very familiar with his work, but not enough to argue his predictions on a case by case basis. nor am i interested in doing so, i just think his (and other futurists) personal romance with the idea of immortality has gotten the best of him (or her, if you count ramona).
