I just noticed that the DVD is listed as "not yet released." Is it out of print, or yet to be released? It seems impossible that there isn't an edition already out there.

Fri, January 28, 2005 - 3:32 PMHaha. Alas, I'm tied down -- my poor little ibook doesn't do WiFi.
Next book sale gets me my wish list:
12 inch powerbook
Treo
ipod
-- and a juicy high speed connection
Until then it's dial up

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

It's got USB right? Get a wifi USB adapter. They work wonders.

Re: Max Headroom DVD
Fri, January 28, 2005 - 4:40 PMI thought about getting an adapter -- but I have another reason for resisting. Not having a fast connection means, at home, I have to be judicious in my surfing. Worried that if it's too easy, or fast, I won't get any work done for downlading. Another book means not only more money but also high speed as a reward -- further motivation. -

Re: Max Headroom DVD
Fri, January 28, 2005 - 10:33 PMThink how long you take dialing in.
As it is, I scan tribe frequently all day. It's a matter of minutes. Hop on, check stuff, write, and I'm gone.
Cue up sme downloads, and go do somethone else.
Besides.. how 'punk is scamming your net feed through the air? :)

Sat, January 29, 2005 - 10:24 PMOh, I agree with you, believe me -- the idea of a wireless office is very seductive. Eventually, I'll be able to do it. For now it's a good motivation to sell something so I can afford it. -

Mon, January 31, 2005 - 10:43 AMWhiners. I have no DVD burner, no high-speed modem (think: "acoustic-coupler"), no WiFi linakage sh*t (think: "string-can-phone").
What I have is Friends Who Can Find Things.
Ooooh, look: the entire seson (minus premiere) of Quark!
thanks, guys! -

Sun, March 6, 2005 - 12:10 AMIf you're living in any kind of populated area, odds are you (and M.) can bag a cheap-ass USB wi-fi adaptor, and benefit from your neighbors' high-speed hookups. Most people not only don't set up a password WLAN, they leave the router its default name.
In M.'s case, he has an iBook, which means he can google hotspots at local.google.com and find places to surf.

D00d, you need one of these. This little doodad in my iBook has been more reliable than any other network connection I've seen. The iBooks have a plastic case, meaning the reception on their case-internal-antenna is better than a PowerBooks'. -

Re: Max Headroom DVD
Sun, February 13, 2005 - 10:35 AMHrmm..
So I downloaded the first season's torrents and am working on the second.
Unfortunately, the main torrents available seem to be ripped off of TechTV, which IIRC means that they were sliced-and-diced a little bit.
I'm betting it's something obnoxious like the rights to the show are a tad messy and/or somebody just doesn't want to produce the DVD for some reason or another.
But at least the UK TV-movie is perfectly fine and the way I remember it. It's interesting to compare what they did in the UK version to the American version. Like, weird cultural things.
For example, some of the scenes are left up to the imagination. The very beginning of the UK version has the action happening offscreen in ways that make you think more and makes things far less explicit. The US version has more times where Edison Carter is subject to the admiration of his peers.
The UK version did a much better job with the bodybank goons. Breughel and Mahler were much more compelling characters in the UK version than in the US version. Both versions gave the characters a sense of being decidedly evil, but in the UK version, they did a better job of making them seem really messed up, where in the US version they were more thuggish. -

Re: Max Headroom DVD
Tue, April 3, 2007 - 5:19 AMI've witnessed at least some strange editing of the torrents you speak of. At least, it seemed that way as I don't have the originals for reference. Undoubtedly some of the content encroaching on commercial time is on the cutting room floor.
Still this has been quite a gem of a download, and full kudos to the Digital Archive Project for collecting what they could.

Re: Max Headroom DVD
Tue, April 3, 2007 - 11:21 AMThe weird part of the Tech TV episodes is the strange hum that makes me think it was videotaped off a different source. Like the pointed a camera at a tv. Very odd.
anyway, yeah, that's how it works. Whoever was willing to do the last capture sets the quality and file type. I get the Daily show all the time and sometimes the moment of zen is left in, zometimes they cut it off. But, I think, in general, these guys are just doing fast cuts on big files and miss the blackout every once in a while. Better that than a frame or two of obnoxiously loud commercial between segments.

Max Headroom talk show
Sat, May 26, 2007 - 12:01 AMWhat about the UK TV series? All I am able to find out is it was on C4 and Cinemax in the mid-late 80's. I've been hunting down full episodes, or even just clips for a while now, but it seems to be unobtainable. I have found some audio clips at paul.rutgers.edu/~mcgrew/MMMax/ , but am unable to find more.
If anyone knows where these shows are on stream or even download please let me know.
